Why Firehouse Theatre Got Involved

I first heard about RVA Baroque’s world premiere opera JULIE, MONSTER when the company did a virtual holiday concert this past December at Firehouse.

The concert was a joy to present and experience. It represented all of our values – a discipline-busting hybrid program that included 15th century poetry and 21st century rap performed by a group of amazing artists who were dedicated to their rigorous craft and achieved the highest artistic standards.

After the performance, I heard a couple of the RVA Baroque performers talking about how much they liked Firehouse and how perfect it would be for JULIE, MONSTER. I inserted myself in the conversation and asked what JULIE, MONSTER was.

They began telling me about Julie d’Aubigny. It was an incredible story and this was the perfect time for it.

It was obvious to me that JULIE, MONSTER should receive its world premiere at Firehouse, “where new lives.”
